ABSTRACT. Brassica spp. production can be negatively affected by clubroot, which is caused by the protozoan Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin. Most of the information on clubroot control is derived from studies in temperate regions. Here, management strategies were evaluated to reduce broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) crop losses owing to clubroot in tropical mountain regions. The first experiment revealed the effect of green manure from coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), sweet corn (Zea mays L.), and spontaneous vegetation (control) associated with broccoli seedlings of 4 different sizes. In the second experiment, the effect of soil amendments (limestone and steel slag) in conjunction with poultry litter (fresh or composted for 45 days) and without poultry litter (control), was assessed. Both field experiments sought to evaluate the disease intensity, plant development (root growth, biomass, and nutrient accumulation), and yield. Sunn hemp and coriander biomass resulted in higher healthy root volumes and dry weights of broccoli. However, such benefits were not derived from corn treatment. Compared to smaller seedlings (10 mL cell and 20 days of age, and 16 mL cell and 24 days of age), the use of larger seedlings (35 mL cell and 28 days of age, and 50 mL cell and 32 days of age) resulted in lower intensity of clubroot and increased the average yield by 143% in summer crops. Steel slag, like limestone, corrected soil acidity and resulted in plant growth; however, clubroot intensity was not significantly affected. Fresh and composted poultry litter increased the percentage of diseased roots compared with the control; however, broccoli yield was not affected by the treatments. Using green manure (sunn hemp or coriander) and well-developed seedlings is recommended as a strategy to reduce losses induced by clubroot during broccoli cultivation.

ABSTRACT Capsicum peppers originate from the American continent. Their culinary and medicinal potential, first exploited by indigenous peoples over 7000 years ago is vast, however more studies are needed. Despite the existence of germplasm banks that house hundreds of accessions of the genus, only a little of this diversity is seen in large markets. In this respect, the morpho-agronomic characterization of the accessions allows not only the identification of the existing variability, but also the agronomic and commercial potential of the genotypes. Therefore, this study proposes to characterize and estimate genetic divergence between accessions of the Capsicum germplasm collection at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) based on multicategorical traits. The species were identified and 29 accessions were characterized in a greenhouse, based on 31 multicategorical descriptors of the crop. The collected data were subjected to the Cole-Rodgers dissimilarity index and to hierarchical clustering (Nearest Neighbor) and optimization (Tocher’s) methods. Tocher's method was considered the most suitable to group the accessions of the germplasm bank. Results indicate that the multicategorical descriptors properly assess the diversity in the chosen method and display the existence of high variability in the collection, which can be used in Capsicum spp. breeding programs.

RESUMO: A hérnia das crucíferas, causada por Plasmodiophora brassicae, é limitante à produção de Brassica spp. em todo o mundo. Pouco se conhece sobre os fatores relacionados ao desenvolvimento da doença em plantas de couve-comum (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) e em cultivos em áreas de montanha sob condições tropicais. Objetivou-se avaliar a severidade da hérnia das crucíferas em lavouras de couve-comum, identificar potenciais falhas no manejo e os fatores de solo e relevo relacionados a sua ocorrência. O estudo foi conduzido em 24 lavouras de couve-comum da Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil). Registraram-se as práticas de manejo do solo e da couve-comum adotadas na região e coletaram-se amostras de solo e plantas. Em seguida, determinaram-se os atributos do solo e do relevo, a severidade da doença, biomassa e os teores e acúmulo de nutrientes e Al nas plantas. Observou-se alta disseminação do patógeno nas áreas. Foram identificadas práticas inadequadas e recorrentes na região como o cultivo sequencial de espécies hospedeiras, baixa adoção a análise de fertilidade, calagem e de medidas de conservação do solo, e o uso comunitário de máquinas e implementos agrícolas sem limpeza prévia. Identificou-se associação da doença com solos mais ácidos, sujeitos a maior acúmulo de água e com elevados teores de Al3+; e a maior teor e acúmulo de Al nas raízes. Práticas de manejo devem ser adotadas na região visando a redução do potencial de inóculo de P. brassicae e o aumento da fertilidade do solo.

ABSTRACT: Clubroot disease, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, limits the production of Brassica spp. worldwide. Little is known about the factors related to the development of the disease in kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) plants and in crops in mountainous areas under tropical conditions. This study examined the severity of clubroot in kale crops as well as identify potential flaws in management and the soil and relief factors related to its occurrence. The study was conducted in 24 kale fields in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Soil and kale growth management practices adopted in the region were identified and samples of soil and plants were collected. Subsequently, soil and relief attributes, disease severity, biomass and nutrient and Al contents and accumulation in the plants were determined. There was a high spread of the pathogen in the areas. Inappropriate and recurrent practices in the region were detected, e.g., sequential cultivation of host species, low adoption of soil fertility analysis and liming and conservation practices, and community use of agricultural machinery and implements without prior cleaning. The disease was associated with more acidic soils, subject to greater water accumulation and with high levels of Al3+ as well as with higher Al contents and accumulation in the roots. Management practices must be adopted in the region to reduce the potential inoculum of P. brassicae and to increase soil fertility.

RESUMO: A biofumigação consiste na liberação de compostos biocidas voláteis no solo a partir da incorporação de determinadas plantas e de seus resíduos. As espécies da família Brassicaceae são as plantas mais utilizadas na biofumigação. Em sua constituição, possuem os glucosinolatos que, após hidrólise enzimática, produzem compostos como os isotiocianatos com efeito biofungicida comprovado cientificamente. As espécies de brássicas mais utilizadas pertencem aos gêneros Brassica, Raphanus, Sinapis e Eruca. Além da liberação de compostos no solo, mecanismos complementares como o fornecimento de matéria orgânica, nutrientes e melhoria da estrutura do solo, também desempenham papel complementar na biofumigação. Diversos estudos foram publicados nas últimas duas décadas com a utilização de resíduos de brássicas na biofumigação e apresentaram resultados promissores no manejo de patógenos de solo (fungos e oomicetos, nematóides, bactérias e protozoários), sementes de plantas daninhas e insetos. Novas formas de utilização também foram validadas nos últimos anos, inclusive com o desenvolvimento de produtos tecnológicos patenteados como formulações líquidas e pellets. Nesta revisão, objetivamos apresentar estes novos desdobramentos iniciando com os conceitos relacionados à biofumigação. Em seguida, apresentamos os mecanismos de ação e compostos envolvidos; as espécies de brássicas, produtos e recomendações para sua utilização; e exemplos promissores de adoção da técnica a nível mundial. Pretende-se, dessa forma, detalhar os avanços no conhecimento básico e aplicado do assunto.

ABSTRACT: Biofumigation involves the release of volatile biocidal compounds in the soil through the incorporation of certain plants and their residues. Species of the Brassicaceae family are the most widely used plants for biofumigation. These plants contain glucosinolates, which produce compounds, such as isothiocyanates, following enzymatic hydrolysis, with scientifically proven fungicidal effects. The most commonly used brassica species belong to the genera Brassica, Raphanus, Sinapis, and Eruca. In addition to the release of compounds in the soil, complementary mechanisms, such as the supply of organic matter and nutrients, and improvement of the soil structure, also play a role in biofumigation. In the past two decades, several studies on the use of brassica residues in biofumigation have been published, showing promising results in the management of soil pathogens (fungi and oomycetes, nematodes, bacteria, and protozoa), weed seeds, and insects. Usage of new biofumigation compounds has also been validated in recent years, including the development of patented technological products such as liquid formulations and pellets. The objective of this article was to review these new developments, beginning with concepts related to biofumigation, and to discuss the mechanisms of action of compounds involving brassica species and the recommendations on usage. Promising examples of the use of this technique are also presented, further detailing the advances in basic and applied knowledge on the subject.

RESUMO O cultivo de hortaliças se destaca pelo uso intensivo de insumos agrícolas, devido à exigência nutricional em curto período de tempo e alta susceptibilidade a pragas e doenças. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar os principais fatores responsáveis pelas alterações nos teores pseudototais e biodisponíveis de Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb e Zn nos solos sob cultivo intensivo de hortaliças. Para tal, no ano de 2017, foram coletadas amostras de terra em 146 pontos no município de Petrópolis-RJ. As amostras foram coletadas na profundidade de 0-20 cm, em propriedades familiares com cultivo de hortaliças em pleno período de produção. Para determinação dos teores pseudototais dos elementos tóxicos foi utilizada a metodologia da EPA 3050B. O procedimento de fracionamento geoquímico foi realizado com base no método BCR. Também foram calculados os índices de poluição. Em geral, as áreas produtoras de hortaliças apresentaram baixa contaminação por Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn e Ni, exceto para Cd que apresentou severa contaminação. Nas áreas que apresentam os menores valores de declividade, houve aumento nos teores da maioria dos elementos tóxicos, refletindo a influência do relevo. De maneira geral, o manejo inadequado do solo, a aplicação intensiva de adubação fosfatada, potássica e orgânica, assim como, o revelo, foram as variáveis que mais influenciaram no enriquecimento e biodisponibilidade de elementos tóxicos no solo.

ABSTRACT Vegetable cultivation stands out for intensive use of agricultural inputs due to high nutritional requirements of plants within a short period and their high susceptibility to pests and diseases. This study aimed to identify the main factors responsible for changes in pseudo-total and bioavailable contents of Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in soils under intensive vegetable cultivation. Soil samples were collected from 146 sites in Petrópolis (RJ), Brazil, in 2017. The samples were collected at a depth of 0-20 cm in family farm systems during vegetable production period. Pseudo-total contents of toxic elements were determined by the EPA 3050B method. Geochemical fractionation procedure was used based on the BCR method. Pollution indices were also calculated. In general, vegetable producing areas presented low contamination by Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Ni, except for Cd, which showed severe contamination. In areas with the lowest slopes, most of the toxic elements showed increasing contents, reflecting relief influence. Overall, inadequate soil management, intensive application of phosphate, potassium, and organic fertilization, and relief were the most influencing parameters on the enrichment and bioavailability of toxic elements in the soil.

ABSTRACT. The effects of the dose and application method of limestone - broadcast or in furrow - and of agricultural gypsum on soil fertility, the control of clubroot, and cauliflower development in mountain farming areas were evaluated. Initially, four doses of broadcast limestone (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 Mg ha-1) and two cauliflower cultivars (Sharon and Piracicaba Precoce) were analyzed. A second experiment evaluated limestone (4.0 Mg ha-1) application treatments: broadcast and in furrow, broadcast limestone + gypsum (3.0 + 1.0 Mg ha-1), and broadcast gypsum (1.0 Mg ha-1). Soil fertility was improved, and significant increases were observed in the total and healthy root volume with increasing doses of limestone. With 4.0 Mg ha-1, a 58 and 85% increase in yield was observed in Sharon and Piracicaba, respectively, compared to the control. Treatments with limestone and limestone + gypsum, regardless of the application method, elevated pH (≥ 10%), base saturation (V%) (≥ 37%), and calcium (Ca) contents (≥ 100%), and reduced the levels of aluminum ions (Al3+) (≥ 60%) and clubroot severity (≥ 64%) and favored biomass accumulation (≥ 27%) and yield (≥ 9.2%). The application of limestone in the furrow yielded results similar to the broadcast application.

RESUMO A hérnia das crucíferas, causada por Plasmodiophora brassicae, é uma doença de difícil controle, sendo limitante ao cultivo de couve-flor. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência da calagem, combinada ao uso de biofungicida à base de Trichoderma harzianum, no controle de hérnia das crucíferas em couve-flor. Em ensaio de campo, avaliou-se o biofungicida associado à aplicação de doses (0 Mg ha-1; 1,0 Mg ha-1; 2,0 Mg ha-1 e 4,0 Mg ha-1) de calcário calcinado. Posteriormente, em casa-de-vegetação, avaliou-se o biofungicida combinado à calagem com cal virgem (2,54 Mg ha-1), além das testemunhas ciazofamida e água. Foram analisados a severidade da doença e os atributos relacionados ao desenvolvimento da raiz e da planta. No experimento a campo, houve incrementos significativos no volume e massa fresca de raiz sadia, massa seca total de raiz, massa fresca e diâmetro das inflorescências e redução no volume de raízes doentes, em resposta às doses de calcário. O biofungicida reduziu o crescimento das raízes e a massa fresca das inflorescências. Em casa-de-vegetação, a calagem incrementou o volume e massa fresca de raízes sadias e a massa seca total de raiz, bem como reduziu a severidade da doença. Não foi observada diferença significativa entre o biofungicida e a testemunha (água), que mostraram-se inferiores à ciazofamida. O biofungicida não foi eficiente no controle da doença e não favoreceu o crescimento das plantas de couve-flor, seja isoladamente ou combinado à calagem. A calagem reduziu a severidade da doença e aumentou o crescimento radicular e a produtividade de couve-flor.

ABSTRACT Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a disease that limits the cauliflower cultivation and is difficult to control. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of liming combined with the use of Trichoderma harzianum-based biofungicide for the control of clubroot in cauliflower. In a field experiment, the use of the biofungicide in combination with the application of calcined limestone doses (0 Mg ha-1, 1.0 Mg ha-1, 2.0 Mg ha-1 and 4.0 Mg ha-1) was evaluated. Subsequently, in a greenhouse, the biofungicide combined with liming with quicklime (2.54 Mg ha-1) was tested, and cyazofamid and water were tested as controls. The disease severity and attributes related to root and plant development were analyzed. In the field experiment, the healthy root volume and fresh weight, total root dry weight and inflorescence fresh weight and diameter were all significantly increased, while the diseased root volume, in response to the limestone doses, was reduced. The biofungicide reduced the root growth and inflorescence fresh weight. In the greenhouse, liming increased the healthy root volume and fresh weight, as well as total root dry weight, and reduced the disease severity. No significant difference was observed between the biofungicide and the control (water), which were inferior to cyazofamid. The biofungicide was not efficient in controlling the disease and did not favour the growth of cauliflower plants, either alone or combined with liming. Liming reduced the disease severity and increased the cauliflower root growth and yield.

Desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objectivo de avaliar o efeito de extratos de canela (12%), alho (8%), pimenta (16%), tabaco (6%), e das caldas viçosa, bordalesa, sulfocálcica e sulfocálcica em emulsão (todas a 1%) em cinco isolados de Stemphylium solani e a eficácia dos mesmos em controlar a doença no tomateiro em estufa. Nos testes in vitro, utilizaram-se clorotalonil (1800 mg.L-1) e água como testemunhas e avaliaram-se o efeito dos tratamentos no crescimento micelial, germinação e produção de conídios. Em estufa, avaliou-se o efeito dos tratamentos na área abaixo da curva da progressão da doença (AACPD) e na produção de frutos, alterando o fungicida utilizado como testemunha para mancozebe (3 g.L-1). Observou-se grande variabilidade entre os isolados quanto à sensibilidade aos tratamentos. Estes não afetaram a esporulação, excepto a calda sulfocálcica em emulsão que a estimulou em todos os isolados. As caldas bordalesa e viçosa inibiram completamente o crescimento micelial e reduziram significativamente a germinação dos conídios na maioria dos isolados. Os extratos vegetais e as caldas causaram redução da AACPD comparado à testemunha água, especialmente a calda bordalesa, mas não afetaram a produção de frutos.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of extracts of cinnamon (12%), garlic (8%), pepper (16%) and tobacco (6%) and viçosa mixture, bordeaux mixture, lime sulfur and sulfur emulsion (all 1%) on five isolates of Stemphylium solani and their efficiency in disease control of tomato in greenhouse. In tests in vitro, chlorothalonil (1800 mg.L-1) and water were used as controls and the mycelial growth, germination and the production of conidia were evaluated. At greenhouse, the treatments effect on the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and production of fruits was evaluated, altering the fungicide control to mancozebe (3 g.L-1). There was high variability among isolates concerning sensitivity to treatments. Treatments did not affect spore production, except lime sulfur emulsion, which stimulated it in all isolates. Viçosa and bordeaux mixtures inhibited completely the mycelial growth and reduced significantly the conidial germination in most isolates. The extracts and mixtures decreased the AUDPC compared to water control, mainly bordeaux mixture. The treatments did not affect the fruits production.

A análise conjunta de variáveis qualitativas e quantitativas tem sido apontada como ferramenta útil na estimativa da divergência genética entre os acessos de uma coleção de germoplasma. O presente trabalho teve como objetivos caracterizar uma coleção de germoplasma de tomateiro do grupo cereja, com base em descritores qualitativos e quantitativos e utilizar o algoritmo de Gower na quantificação da divergência genética. Estudaram-se 40 acessos de tomateiro cereja, cultivados em manejo orgânico nas condições de Seropédica, Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram utilizados quatro descritores qualitativos relacionados aos frutos e nove descritores quantitativos. Os dados foram analisados de forma conjunta pelo algoritmo de Gower. Detectou-se variabilidade para coloração, formato e número de lóculos do fruto. A coloração vermelha foi observada em 25 acessos testados, registrando-se também a produção de frutos amarelos, laranjas e marrons. Para número de lóculos, foi registrada a ocorrência de frutos bi, tri, tetra e pluriloculares (com até sete lóculos). O método UPGMA foi o que obteve o maior coeficiente de correlação cofenética (0,80), observando-se a formação de sete grupos. Os grupos formados permitiram a distinção de frutos classificados como cereja e outros que não se adequaram a esta definição, por estarem acima do diâmetro equatorial proposto para esta classe.

The joint analysis of qualitative and quantitative variables has been considered a useful tool to estimate the genetic divergence among accessions of a gene bank. The purpose of this research was: (i) to characterize a collection of cherry tomatoes, using quantitative and qualitative descriptors, and (ii) to use Gower's algorithm to quantify genetic divergence among genotypes, employing a joint descriptors analysis. Forty accessions of organically grown cherry tomato were studied in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four qualitative fruit descriptors and nine qualitative descriptors were used. Data were analyzed using Gower's algorithm. There was variability for color, shape and number of locules per fruit. The red color was observed in fruits of 25 accessions. Fruit with different colors such as yellow, orange and brown were also observed. Regarding locule number, the presence of fruit with two, three, four and even with seven locules was detected. The UPGMA method resulted in the highest value for cophenetic correlation (0.80) and seven clusters were formed. The formed clusters made it possible to distinguish fruit classified as cherry tomato from other type grouped in different clusters, because the fruits this category were larger than cherry type considering the equatorial diameter of the fruit.

Mudas de mamoeiro da cultivar Baixinho de Santa Amália foram transplantadas para covas de 40x60x40 cm, em áreas de três estruturas contíguas: (a) estufa sombreada (cobertura de plástico), (b) estufa sombreada + sombrite (cobertura adicional de sombrite com 30% de sombreamento sobre o plástico) e (c) telado (cobertura exclusiva de sombrite 30%). Ao lado de tais estruturas foi implantada uma área de cultivo de mamoeiro em ambiente natural. Os tratos culturais aplicados foram os condizentes às normas técnicas vigentes na agricultura orgânica. As irrigações foram procedidas com mangueira plástica, evitando-se molhar folhas e frutos. Aos 45 dias pós-transplantio e, subseqüentemente, a intervalos mensais, as plantas foram inspecionadas em relação à incidência de lesões foliares causada pelo fungo Asperisporium caricae. Para efeito de análise estatística, após o teste de homogeneidade das variâncias, foram consideradas quatro repetições por ambiente (tratamento), com seis plantas úteis por parcela. O modelo de quantificação da doença indicou efeito altamente significativo dos ambientes protegidos, estufa e estufa sombreada, quanto à incidência de sintomas, em comparação com ambientes de telado e em área natural de cultivo. Durante os 12 meses de avaliações foi constatada alta correlação entre incidência da doença e pluviosidade e umidade relativa do ar. As estruturas cobertas com plástico demonstraram alto potencial de controle de A. caricae, sendo, portanto, recomendáveis no sistema orgânico de produção do mamoeiro.

Transplants of Baixinho de Santa Amália papaya cultivar were grown in three neighboring plant growth facilities: a) greenhouse (covered with plastic sheet); b) shaded greenhouse (with sombrite 30% black screen over the plastic sheet); c) screenhouse (covered with sombrite 30% only). Next to such structures a plot was settled for cultivation under natural environment. Cultural practices were conducted according to technical regulations for organic production. Irrigations were proceeded with plastic hose avoiding to wet leaves and fruits. From the 45th day after transplanting and subsequently at monthly intervals the plants were monitored in relation to incidence of leaf lesions caused by the fungus Asperisporium caricae. For statistical analysis, after homogeneity of variance test, four repetition were considered within each ambient (= treatment), with six individuals for sampling. The model used for disease quantification indicated a highly significant effect of protected environments greenhouse and shaded greenhouse relating the reduction of leaf lesion numbers compared to screenhouse and natural cropping condition. Disease levels maintained a close correlation with rainfall and air relative humidity during the 12 months of evaluations. The plastic-covered structures showed high potential for controlling A. caricae on papaya leaves and may be recommended for papaya production in the organic system.

O cultivo de tomate do grupo cereja vem adquirindo grande importância econômica, sobretudo para os produtores familiares que se utilizam do cultivo orgânico para agregar valor ao seu produto. A introdução de novos genótipos nesse mercado deve ser respaldada por estudos de caracterização e avaliação do germoplasma, os quais, posteriormente, poderão fornecer dados que serão utilizados diretamente pelos produtores ou serão recomendados para programas de melhoramento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar 40 genótipos de tomateiro do grupo cereja, de procedências variadas, sendo 36 acessos da coleção de germoplasma do Departamento de Fitotecnia da UFRRJ e quatro cultivares: 'Joanna', 'Perinha Água Branca (PAB)', 'Samambaia' e o híbrido Super Sweet. As plantas foram cultivadas em condições de campo, sob manejo orgânico, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições e cinco plantas por parcela no período de junho a dezembro de 2004. As variáveis estudadas foram: produção total de frutos, produção de frutos comerciais e não-comerciais, diâmetro longitudinal e equatorial dos frutos, espessura da polpa, massa mínima, média e máxima de frutos por planta. Os dados foram analisados considerando a distância de Mahalanobis e o agrupamento dos acessos foi realizado com base em UPGMA e pela análise de variáveis canônicas. Para a verificação do ajuste entre a matriz de similaridade e o dendrograma obtido, foi calculado o coeficiente de correlação cofenética (CCC). A importância relativa das características foi determinada pelo método de Singh. Os acessos foram separados em dois grupos, um deles contendo apenas o acesso ENAS 1021, enquanto o outro grupo, com 39 acessos, foi subdividido, gerando a formação de sete subgrupos. O coeficiente de correlação cofenética foi de 0,9, demonstrando que houve um ajuste muito bom entre a matriz de distância e o dendrograma. As três primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 78,58% da variação observada, com a formação de sete grupos. A variável mais importante foi a produção de frutos não-comerciais, que explicou 22,71% da variação total. A cultivar 'Perinha Água Branca' foi a que produziu menor porcentagem de frutos não-comerciais (2,0%), enquanto o híbrido Super Sweet produziu 8% de frutos não-comerciais.

Cherry tomato is becoming an important crop alternative mainly for small farmers that use family hand labor and use organic management to differentiate their product. The introduction of new genotypes in this market should be supported by germplasm characterization and evaluation. This germplasm could be recommended for farmers or introduced in breeding programs. The aim of this research was to test 40 cherry tomatoes accessions from different sources, being 36 accessions from germplasm collection of Department de Fitotecnia of UFRRJ and four cultivars, namely 'Joanna', 'Perinha Água Branca', 'Samambaia' and Super Sweet. The plants were grown in field conditions, under organic management, in a randomized block design with four replications and five plants per plot, from June to December 2004. The following variables were studied: fruit total yield; commercial and non-commercial fruit yield; longitudinal and equatorial fruit diameter; pulp thickness; minimum, medium and maximum fruit mass variation per plant. The data were analyzed considering Mahalanobis distance and the cluster analysis was performed using UPGMA (Unweighted Pair-Group Method Using an Arithmetic Average) and canonic variables. The adjustment between the similarity matrix and dendrograma was performed using the cophenetic correlation. The characters relative importance was determined by Singh´s method. The accessions were clustered in two groups, one of them with only one accession (ENAS 1021) and the second group, with 39 accessions, was subdivided generating seven subgroups. The cophenetic correlation was 0.9 meaning a very good adjustment between the distance matrix and the dendrogram. The first three canonic variables explained 78.58% of observed variation, forming seven groups. 'Perinha Agua Branca' was the one that produced lower proportion of non-commercial fruit yield (11.11%) while Super Sweet produced 48.05% of damaged fruit.

Para avaliar o efeito de métodos de inocuação de Xanthomonas vesicatoria (Doidge) (9) em sementes de tomate sobre a qualidade da semente e transmissão da fitobactéria compararam-se os tratamentos: 1) inoculação a vácuo com suspensão de células de X. vesicatoria em STP (0,005M, pH 7,4 e NaCl 0,85%); 2) imersão por 24 horas em suspensão de células de X. vesicatoria em STP; 3) vácuo em solução STP; 4) imersão por 24 horas em STP; 5) imersão por 5 min. em álcool etílico e 6) semente original. As avaliações foram realizadas por testes de germinação e isolamentos em meio Nutriente Agar Modificado (NAM) aos 1, 15, 30 e 45 dias após aplicação dos tratamentos. Em seguida, avaliou-se o efeito da umidade (4% e 8%) e o armazenamento das sementes inoculadas e variações de umidade antes da realização dos testes sobre a sobrevivência e recuperação de X. vesicatoria. Os métodos de inoculação testados podem ser utilizados em trabalhos de rotina, porém, as sementes devem ser utilizadas até 30 dias após a inoculação a partir de quando ocorre uma redução acentuada na taxa de recuperação da fitobactéria. A umidade das sementes interfere na sobrevivência e na transmissão de X. vesicatoria pelas sementes de tomate.

The efficiency of six methods of Xanthomonas vesicatoria (Doidge) (9) inoculation on tomato seeds, and their effects on seed quality were tested : 1) vacuum inoculation with X. vesicatoria cell suspension in PB (0.005M, pH 7.4 e NaCl 0.85%); 2) immersion for 24 hours in with X. vesicatoria cell suspension and PB. 3) vacuum and saline solution in phosphate buffer; 4) immersion in PB for 24 hours; 5) seeds + ethanol; 6) control. Evaluations were performed for germination test and isolation in Modified Agar Nutrient (NAM)) at 1, 15, 30 and 45 days after treatments imposition. The moisture effect on the transmission of X. vesicatoria seeds inoculated under vacuum, followed or not by air drying at 30±1 ºC, until 4% and 8% moisture were tested. Evaluations were performed as described above, after 24 hours and 30 days after the treatments. The methods of X. vesicatoria inoculation in tomato seeds can be used on routine analyses, however, inoculated seeds should be used until 30 days after inoculation. After this period, a large reduction on the recovery of viable cells occurs. The seed water content interferes with X. vesicatoria survival and transmission and explains the low percentages of X. vesicatoria recovery.

Agrobio é um biofertilizante líquido fabricado à base de esterco bovino, água, melaço e sais minerais, que são submetidos a um processo de fermentação à temperatura ambiente por 56 dias em recipientes abertos. Este produto tem sido largamente utilizado com sucesso por agricultores orgânicos e convencionais em todo o estado do Rio de Janeiro, no controle de várias enfermidades vegetais em diferentes culturas. Em bioensaios realizados em casa de vegetação, observou-se uma ação bacteriostática equivalente a de produtos químicos comerciais contra Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria em mudas de pimentão (Capsicum annuum L.), numa concentração de 5%. Nos bioensaios in vitro, onde foram testadas as concentrações de 2, 5 10 e 50% do Agrobio comercial, observou-se que, a partir da concentração de 5%, ocorreu um nível satisfatório de inibição do crescimento bacteriano, apesar deste ter sido inferior ao obtido com o uso de sulfato de cobre e sulfato de estreptomicina.

Agrobio is a liquid biofertilizer made from fresh cattle manure, water, molasses and minerals, which are fermented under room temperature in open containers for 56 days. This product has been widely used by organic and conventional farmers throughout Rio de Janeiro State for the control of several plant pathogens in different crops. Greenhouse bioassays showed that Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria in pepper (Capsicum annuum) transplants were satisfactorily controlled when concentration of Agrobio was 5%. in vitro assays using concentrations of 2, 5, 10 and 50% showed that concentrations above 5% were capable of controlling the pathogen. However, the levels of control of Agrobio were lower than those of copper sulfate and streptomycin sulfate.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o progresso da mancha-bacteriana do pimentão a partir de quatro quantidades iniciais de mudas infectadas (0; 3,3; 10 e 100%) associado à aplicação semanal de oxicloreto de cobre (2,4 g de i.a./L de água) ou não. Foram conduzidos cinco ensaios, em condições de campo, em Seropédica (RJ), entre junho de 1996 e setembro de 1999. Quantificou-se a intensidade de doença, regularmente, por meio de estimativas visuais da severidade da doença (área foliar lesionada e desfolha) e calculou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença normalizada (AACPD/ número de dias). Estas foram submetidas à Análise de Variância (p=0,01) e à análise de regressão linear em função do logaritmo da quantidade inicial de mudas infectadas. A redução do inóculo inicial teve efeito direto na quantidade final de doença, e de forma mais marcante sob condições mais propícias ao desenvolvimento da doença. A eficiência do oxicloreto de cobre foi variável e na maioria das vezes ineficiente, principalmente nos períodos mais propícios a epidemia, com redução de sua eficiência pela elevação da temperatura.

The progress of pepper leaf spot was examined starting with different initial quantities of infected seedlings (0; 3.3; 10; and 100%), treated or not with chemical control through the weekly application of copper oxichloride (2.4 g of i.a/L of water). Five experiments were undertaken in Seropédica (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in different time periods from June, 1996 to September, 1999. The intensity of disease was quantified regularly through visual estimation of disease severity (leaf area with lesions and leaf loss). The values for the area under the disease progress curves were calculated (AUDPC/number of days). The data was subjected to analysis of variance (p<0,01) and simple linear regression analysis was employed for the values of AUDPC/day in function of the initial quantity of infected seedlings. The reduction of initial inoculation had a direct affect on the final severity of disease, which was more stricking under the most favorable conditions for disease development. The efficiency of copper fungicides was variable. In the majority of cases, copper fungicides were not efficient, especially during the periods most favorable to the epidemics. As temperatures became higher, reduced efficiency was observed.
